Art, Technology, and the Body -Art Classes at Quest

This past block was my first art class at Quest (and for years otherwise). Based on the course description, I originally imagined that it was going to be a typical academic block with more creative projects, I was nervous to discover that our daily homework would include sketching and the creative projects were going to be the facet with which we looked at the concepts themselves, instead of as an analysis of discussions or readings. I have never been so happy in a block before. Having the space, time, freedom, and encouragement to conduct creative expression related to our associations between the body, technology, and connections was incredible. Our final assignment was looking at the interior world in exterior space and our projects ranged from a $20 bill in a glass box beside a hammer and a sign saying “first aid will be administered to those with good intentions” to a model of a brain with technology input into it to a poem about differences between vulnerability of the body and vulnerability of the mind.

Some of our previous classes included creating an object that represented (but did not symbolize or represent) the body while using a light and a buzzer that we programmed and doing a half photograph/half drawing self-portrait.

On the final day (today) we had a potluck lunch where we intentionally disrupted the space of the atrium (one of the themes of the class was disrupting space)

I could not have asked for a better block during this time of year and was a wonderful change from typical essay writing and presentations.
